Jordan Peele’s dazzling summer blockbuster No fell almost completely out of all Oscar talk, a dark horse (no pun intended) in the Best Picture race — and every other category, for that matter. How come?

Not only should No being nominated in categories like Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, the larger-than-life monster movie is expected to top each of those races. It’s too bad that when the Academy announces the nominees on Tuesday morning, No will most likely only earn nods in the technical categories (although those are just as deserved). Sure, there’s a chance the film will show up in categories we didn’t expect – a Best Picture spot is probably the most likely, though still a slim possibility – but there’s almost zero chance that he actually wins the prize.

No should clean up this awards season. Keke Palmer should have a stranglehold on the Best Supporting Actress category, if only for that final motorcycle chase scene, but also for her impeccable comedic timing. She and Angela Bassett are set to battle it out for the statue, for their jaw-dropping performances in action movies. But they are not. Bassett’s biggest competition is probably Everything everywhere all at onceis Jamie Lee Curtis, an actress who wasn’t even the best supporting star in her own movie. What a waste of an exciting and competitive category.

Daniel Kaluuya, too, should be in the running for best actor. Even though the top three spots are pretty much locked in thanks to repeated accolades from Austin Butler, Colin Farrell and Brendan Fraser, throw Kaluuya a bone! Unforgettable performances from Steven Yeun and Michael Wincott earned awards buzz. It’s a shame that Yeun, Wincott, and Perea were entirely eliminated from the rewards prediction talks, because No struggle to create steam in any category.

Then there are the big rewards, which No is the most deserving: best film, best director and best original screenplay. Peele is no stranger to these awards; get out earned a nomination in each of those categories (and Best Actor), winning the Best Original Screenplay statue. Oscar fans celebrated the Academy’s decision to award the prize to Peeles’ psychologically terrifying and politically charged screenplay. This victory was especially a step in the right direction after the #OscarsSoWhite backlash of 2016. Peele should have become an Academy darling like Spielberg or James Cameron after get out– the lack of buzz around his last two horror films is disheartening to say the least. (Not that the sub-par We deserved a ton of Oscar names, though Lupita Nyong’o should have been more celebrated.)

This does not mean No is competing in a less diverse year at the Oscars – though on the face of it, the Best Director category will once again be a battle of whites (minus Daniel Kwan, who co-directed Everything everywhere all at once with Daniel Scheinert). This year’s offerings contain a handful of diverse stories, from Steven Spielberg’s battles with anti-Semitism to his autobiography The Fabelmans representing a Chinese-American immigrant family Everything everywhere all at once. The whale, Tarand women who talk also highlight LGBTQ+ characters.

But No has more ground to stand on than it offers in terms of Hollywood representation. (Also, it’s not Jordan Peele’s job to make films that right the Academy’s wrongs.) The film is a cinematic masterpiece, from its original adventure story to its disturbing cinematography. to its cast of characters, who feel like they were made to work together in one grand celestial thriller. In a year where “movies about movies” dominated awards discussions (think Babylon and The Fabelmans), No stands out as the strongest example of this theme – here’s a giant creature with a camera lens for a face, sucking in humans all over Hollywood and eating them. A traumatized child star has learned nothing from his past and attempts to control nature for his own show. All the while, the thrills are piling up on top of each other, leading to a big Akira hint.

No won many comparisons with Jaws and AND the extra-terrestrial when it was released last summer. As awards season rolls on, it looks like the blockbuster will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors: the two Jaws and HEY, despite being a game-changer, only won technical categories. But at least they won the Best Picture nominations! What’s ironic is that Spielberg himself, father of the splashy fantasy American blockbuster, has a better shot at Best Picture and Director this year for his bait-winning drama. The Fabelmans. Noand we all deserve better.
