Trois Vallées Varésines: Tadej Pogacar wins ahead of Sergio Higuita and Alejandro Valverde

Tadej Pogacar, who ends his season in Italy this week, proved that he was in good shape before the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday. The Slovenian from the UAE Team Emirates team won the Trois Vallées Varésines on Tuesday. He won in Varese, about sixty kilometers north of Milan by sprinting the group of favorites reduced to fifteen elements.

He beat Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who will retire at the end of the year. Three French people are in the top 10: Pierre Latour (Total Energies) is fourth, Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën) fifth and Rudy Molard (Groupama FDJ) tenth.

45th victory for Pogacar

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), another future retiree from the peloton, tried it alone by escaping 3.5 km from the finish but the Italian was quickly caught by the peloton of favorites, led by the Movistars.

Pogacar signed this Tuesday the 45th victory of his career, his fifteenth of the season. He will aim for a new one on Saturday at the Tour of Lombardy, of which he is the title holder, a race which will mark his reunion with Jonas Vingegaard, the man who dethroned him at the Tour de France last summer.
