The shady truth about Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld’s beliefs, often described as problematic, could be observed through his work. An example of the designer’s questionable projects was a 2010 photoshoot involving model Claudia Schiffer. In one photo, Schiffer appears to be styled to appear black. She wears an Afro-textured wig and makeup several shades darker than her natural skin tone. In another shot, it looks like Schiffer is designed to appear Asian. The photo features the model in a short black wig with bangs, cultural attire and intense eyeliner that changes the shape of her eyes.

After Lagerfeld’s death, this problematic photo shoot resurfaced, and social media users were unhappy with the photographer’s decision to pass off Schiffer as three different races. Writer Saeed Jones chimed in Twitter, writing, “Shout out to Karl Lagerfeld by putting Claudia Schiffer in blackface AND yellowface in 2010. Carry on with your memorial messages. » Another user wrote in the writer’s responses, “I thought the same thing. It’s sad that he died but I thought he had racist tendencies…”.

Shevelle Rhule, who is a fashion editor at lifestyle magazine Black Pride, told the Daily Mail why the photoshoot was so harmful. “There aren’t enough women of color in mainstream magazines,” she said. “It just suggests that you can counter the problem by using white models. »
