HONG KONG BANNED THREE FILMS FROM TAIWAN

Hong Kong authorities have banned three films from Taiwan – ‘The Runaways’, ‘The Three Little Boys’ and ‘Quarantine Denny’ – from screening at local film festivals. The report of their ban first appeared on the BBC’s Chinese language portal. The Hong Kong government Office of Films, Newspapers and Articles Administration received new censorship powers last year and must take into account national security considerations. None of the three films address sovereignty in Hong Kong, although a Taiwanese flag can be seen in one of them. Many aspects of life in Hong Kong are closely aligned with the policies and governance of the Chinese mainland. The Chinese government does not view democratically run Taiwan as a separate state. Rather, she sees the island as a rebellious province that needs to be brought to heel, by force if necessary.
