“Patrick Dewaere, my hero”, portrait of a shattered man

On July 16, 1982, Patrick Dewaere killed himself. He was 35 years old. He was then in full glory and his career would take a new turn with the role of Marcel Cerdan reserved for him by Claude Lelouch. Forty years later, his daughter Lola, who was 2 years old at the time of the drama, portrays this father whom she did not have time to know, writing to him in the first person. “I have long carried within me the mystery of your death”she confesses to him. “Today, I know everything. »

Lola Dewaere tells the funny childhood of Patrick, from a family of six brothers and sisters, all actors from an early age, exploited and put in competition by their parents. She traces his origins coated in lies and things left unsaid (he never knew who his father was), the sexual assaults of which he was the victim. Its cracks and its death impulses. His desire for independence with his never-healed wounds that explain his wild, disturbing and sometimes disturbing game, to hide his vulnerability.

A moving declaration of love from his daughter Lola

From the Café de la gare to the first films with Depardieu, from her meeting with Miou-Miou, from her incurable feeling of abandonment, from her fragility and her doubts, from her recourse to drugs to stifle her intimate suffering, Lola even finds the key to understanding the passage to the act. It’s a revelation.

Directed by Alexandre Moix, this evocation is a document on a broken childhood that glory will never repair. Patrick Dewaere has moved forward in life, wobbly and bruised, with the feeling of being rejected, without managing to recover, despite a fine film career and some happiness, such as the birth of his two daughters. But the weight of misfortune was too heavy. He never managed to get rid of it.

This magnificent portrait, tender and poignant, is also and above all a moving declaration of love launched by his daughter to this great absentee, so intrusive. ” I miss you dad ! »she lets go.
