On his blog, Nick Cave answered a fan’s question asking about his plans for the new year. He announces that he plans to write a new album with The Bad Seeds, and to offer his fans a glimpse of his creative process.
“How does it feel to wake up and know you’ve written so many wonderful songs? What are your plans for 2023?” To these questions, asked by Fred, a fan, on his blog The Red Hand Filesthe Australian singer responded in detail, revealing the state of mind in which he was at the start of the year.
He explains : “This is both good and bad news. Good news because who doesn’t want a new Bad Seeds album? Bad news because I have to write this fucking thing.”
A long creative process
And he goes on to give an overview of the slump he goes through during his creative process, which suits this character as dark as it is intense:
“It’s the same with every album (…). Anything resembling a creative impulse is buried deep in a hole filled with moss and frogs, asleep I hope, but not dead. I have to call her, bring her out of her sleep. It becomes an unpleasant, punitive affair, with bulging eyes. I’m starting to get an infuriating singing voice in my head that rhymes, like madness. like sadness.”
His post ends with the few lines he started to write and his vision of the writing phase:
“Writing lyrics sucks. It’s like jumping for frogs, Fred. It’s shit. It’s the swamp. It really hurts. It comes in spurts, but not much and not often. There is something obscene in this whole affair. Like crimes that rhyme. I hope it won’t last long. I’m really scared. But it still is. It lasts a long time. To write a song.”
Creation in the daily life of Nick Cave
The creative process of the Australian poet, to which was then added the mourning of his son Arthur, had already been documented by the Australian director Andrew Dominik in the two films This Much I Know to Be True (2021) and One More Time with Feeling (2016). This confession of a painful elaboration seems to be totally part of the daily life of the author and to serve both as an outlet and as a creative catalyst.
Just over a year after the release of B-Sides & Rarities Part IIa compilation of 27 tracks recorded between 2006 and 2020, he should therefore return in 2023 with his bad seeds to reveal the result of his work.
