NFL: a very difficult game for Zach Wilson and the Jets

Young New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson may have been playing his role against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and his unconvincing performance in a 19-3 loss certainly didn’t help his case Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.

This duel was also that of the first two players selected in the 2021 draft. Let’s say that Jaguars pivot Trevor Lawrence is in better shape after two seasons than poor Wilson.

The latter was confined to the bench in the third quarter in favor of Chris Streveler. The offense hadn’t produced anything good so far, other than an early field goal, and Wilson had completed just nine of 18 passes in addition to being the victim of an interception.

Lawrence was responsible for the only touchdown of the game. Early in the second quarter, the Clemson University alum leaped over a human wall to just cross the end zone on a one-yard run.

The visitors’ quarterback completed 20 of 31 aerial throw-ins for 229 yards.

The Jets absolutely had to go up the field to hope to score points at the end of the game. Garrett Wilson caught Zach Wilson’s pass from 40 yards for the Jets, but when tackled, Foyesade Oluokun forced a fumble and Tre Herndon recovered the ball. The “Jags” only had a little ground to recover to allow Riley Patterson to score his fourth field goal of the evening.

It was the last nail in the coffin for the home team, which could not avoid the fourth consecutive loss. The Jets (7-8) also drop below .500 for the first time in 2022.

The Jaguars (7-8) had a good run by approaching the Tennessee Titans (7-7) at the top of the AFC Southern Division.
