Maverick’s Plot Point Changed After Producers See Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman’s Chemistry

In a legacy like 2022 new movie release Top Gun: Maverick, there are bound to be feuds between these riders known as the best of the best. Had Tom Cruise’s original blockbuster script remained intact, a plot between Monica Barbaro’s Phoenix and Lewis Pullman’s Bob would have headed to those very familiar skies of feud. However, the pair’s chemistry rewrote that angle, turning a pair of adversaries into good friends.

I could see why this script was rewritten by speaking with both Barbaro and Pullman on behalf of Primordial and its home entertainment version of Top Gun: Maverick. Much like their characters, both actors were willing to support each other and provide more details to better tell the stories that arose during our conversation. However, this story begins with Monica Barbaro telling CinemaBlend how this pair of aviators were supposed to get along and how everything changed:

Interestingly, our characters, Phoenix were originally written to dislike Bob. As if she didn’t trust Bob very much or like him. And they changed that immediately. We saw Lew’s phenomenal and charming presence in the way he portrayed Bob in the bar, and you can’t help but love him. Luckily that changed, and it wasn’t something we had to build. Our characters instantly liked each other and we were able to forge that bond on our first Cessna flight, which was fun.

It’s not hard to see why these two got along so well, because watching Barbaro swap stories and compliments with her Superior gun costar suite is such a delight. The energy they brought to the room together is powerful, and it would have been a stretch to imagine Lewis Pullman pretending to disagree with it. Breaking a friendship like this, even through fiction, seems like a crime.

This impression only grew thanks to Pullman’s compliments towards his winger. Reinforcing the fact that Monica Barbaro impressed the Top Gun: Maverick cast with his flying abilities, the man playing the pilot mysteriously known as “Bob” lavished quite a bit of praise on Monica Barbaro’s performance. Supporting this formation of good feelings, here is what Pullman had to say:

Much of art imitated life. Like I think it was pretty hard to do a lot of the things that we were doing, stealing and doing business like that. But Monica was natural, so it was really kind of an instant circumstance to bond. I got advice from Monica and I could talk about the challenges I was going through. Monica never threw up once. Monica also pulled the most G’s of anyone. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, everyone claims to be the best rider among us, except me, I would never accept that claim. But Monica is a real rookie, the best pilot among us, and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.

Like anyone from Top Gun 2 set would tell you, there were a lot of vomiting implicated in Tom Cruise legacy. Barbaro’s iron stomach is just another of those merits of her accomplishments as an actress or aviator, as well as a sign of the pressure she’s put on herself to be a true Top contender. Gun. So, on the one hand, the praise she received from Lewis Pullman is totally deserved.

However, ever-humble Monica Barbaro cut her co-star, and everyone else involved, some slack. Top Gun: Maverick’s the experience tested her in its own way, despite an impressive sight. Reflecting on his own experience, Barbaro returned the compliment to Pullman with this admission:

You cannot control whether or not you vomit. So it was not proof that I was doing something right, it was just that I was lucky. And the fact that you went through all those body experiences and still delivered the performance you did, like I couldn’t! I would have left, I would have disappeared, I would have been on the run. No one would ever hear of me again. I would have run away if it meant I had to go through what you went through to film this. So I think you’re a tougher pilot, but that’s just me.

Everything you’ve read above is just a sampling of the happy energy these two reflected in each other’s company. While the acting skills between them probably could have put on a good show, the fact that the brass behind Top Gun: Maverick let Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman lean into their natural friendship for an even better cinematic experience.

Also, who knows if maverick could have withstood another rivalry in its plot. The one between Miles Teller’s Rooster and Glen Powell’s Hangman was already hot enough, and having to wrap two sons of enemies-turned-friends might have been too much. Thing is, nature won out, with Phoenix and Bob being allowed to fly high like a pair of true blue friends might go. It’s the kind of friendship you like to see when you’re about to make the Danger Zone your temporary home.

Could Top Gun: Maverick be considered one of the best action movies of all time? It’s a question worth asking, especially when its predecessor is still highly regarded and this entry is still quite fresh. If you need to rewatch either film in the series, both are available to rent or own in both digital and physical media. However, you can only stream Superior gun with a Paramount+ subscription at the moment, like Maverick’s The streaming debut still doesn’t have a date to hit the tarmac.
