Matt Lucas is leaving GBBO and the internet has a new host in mind

After three seasons in the UK’s best-known patisserie marquee, host Matt Lucas has decided it’s time to step down from The Great British Bake-Off. The comedian, who is best known for his work with David Walliams on the sketch show little britainbegan presenting the show alongside The Mighty Boosh co-creator Noel Fielding in 2020. Throughout the show, Lucas offered one-liners and moral support for the bakers as they battled through tough technical challenges, and came across as the memorable former Prime Minister Boris Johnson when the show (and the world) was marred by lockdown restrictions.

In a statement following his departure from GBBOLucas explained his decision to quit the much-loved baking competition, saying it was becoming increasingly difficult to juggle his role as host and other commitments, such as fantasy football league. “I would like to extend my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the team and of course the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent” , did he declare. wrote on Twitter. “I wish good luck to whoever will take over and I can’t wait to watch the next series without already knowing who won! »

“I will miss your big smile and sense of fun and silliness,” co-host Noel added in a statement. when Paul says “eggy” in his Scouse accent. You were so pleasant to work with and so kind to the bakers. Have fun on your next adventure. »

Meanwhile, on social media, cake fans are already baking fillers to take on the role – and a few already have brilliant ideas. Following in the tradition of former presenters Sandi Toksvig and Sue Perkins, some have suggested now is a good time to recruit another cake-loving lesbian presenter to the cult series – and to be fair, can you imagine the glorious mayhem that would reign if Miriam Margolyes was dropped on the tent?

Somewhere else, GBBO stans suggested everyone from Joe Lycett to Richard Ayoade – and one inventive viewer even suggested that Noel Fielding could appear as himself and Powerful Boost character Old Gregg at the same time.
