Synopsis
Paul (Marlon Brando) is an American living in Paris whose unfaithful wife committed suicide.
One day, he meets a young woman named Jeanne (Maria Schneider) with whom he begins a sexual relationship.
Critical
Beyond buttery anecdotes and other erotic turmoil, this film is a precious and bittersweet psychological character study that channels its frustration through a forced amoral attitude and sexual escapism that accentuates a male protagonist’s alienation in the dominance and disorientation.
The progressive dependence between the two main characters, resolved with great intensity, is also very interesting.
Maria Schneider and Marlon Brando are phenomenal in their performances.
The work of Bernardo Bertolucci and Vittorio Storaro is magnificent, creating a fascinating atmosphere of rarefied intimacy with subtle camera movements, framings that divide the screen into rooms multiplying the interiors, constant openings and closings of doors…
An underrated movie.
