Critical
Adaptation, among several that have been made for film and television, of the homonymous literary classic by English writer DH Lawrence, a novel published in 1928.
The film, with the protagonist’s voiceover in epistolary mode with her sister, simplifies the book’s subtle contrasts, the lyricism of the natural environment linked to sexual catharsis, and the psychological and social complexities between the characters, to focus on her erotic background. between Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell, accumulating coital scenes monotonously, with little romantic significance beyond the “mechanical” act with aesthetic embellishment.
The subplots also don’t get much development beyond four topical conflict traits.
The salvageable thing is its art direction.
