Kelly Clarkson Covers Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” on “Kellyoke”

Kelly Clarkson, she’s like most of us. Well, in that she can’t get enough of Jimmy Eat World’s 2001 hit, “The Middle.” That’s why it only made sense that the daytime talk show host and pop idol took a power pop swing to the oft-covered song on Thursday. Kelly Clarkson Show during his “Kellyoke” segment.

Clarkson and her house band nailed the song’s urgency, with the singer yelping the ‘everything will be fine’ chorus before a brief, quick-fingered guitar solo in an arrangement that’s layered over luscious Hammond organ and punchy drums. .

The beloved song by the emo pop band from Mesa, Arizona bleed american album was originally released in October 2001 and peaked a few months later when it climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not for nothing, but when Clarkson released his 2015 single, ‘Heartbeat Song’ critics couldn’t help but point out this uncanny similarity between the verses and choruses of the two songs, so Kelly covering the “Kellyoke” track makes sense.

“The Middle” has long been a favorite cover, including an apocryphal story about Prince covering it at the 2009 Oscars after-party, footage of which resurfaced this summer to the delight of the band. It was also covered by Taylor Swift in a 2016 Apple ad. Apple ad? What is it like?! What is that? I do not know. I still freak out every time I hear ‘The Middle’ or whatever we’ve done, like on the radio,” singer Jim Adkins said. AZ Center earlier this year.
