Along with stellar multi-hundred crore hits like KGF 2 and Kantara, the past 12 months has also brought many remarkable first releases that have dared to explore new and refreshing subjects on the big screen. Sagar Puranik’s assured debut is simple in substance but powerful in terms of emotions. Dollu centers on the lives and hardships of those who practice the declining art form of the Dollu Kunitha artists and in a similar vein the film addresses urbanization and similar factors and their impact on nativity and folklore. Dollu won the National Award for Best Kannada Film in 2022.

The sought-after collaboration of Anup Bhandari and Kiccha Sudeep fell short of expectations, but audiences could not ignore the ambition behind its achievement. Although it is a genre film, Vikrant Rona was edited on a grand scale with Anup Bhandari giving a new dimension to his unique imagination – from Shivakumar’s opulent sets to Ajaneesh Loknath’s majestic score, the film has many highlights. Of course, the main draw is Sudeep himself who seems at the top of his game as a gun-throwing macho cop who elevates the somewhat underwhelming narrative with a superb performance.

Ulidavaru Kandanthe and Avane Srimanarayana Cinematographer Karm Chawla’s directorial debut is a deep, sensitive look at the world of boxing that strays completely from the usual clichés of sports biography. With Vinay Rajkumar’s strong central performance, Chawla shatters the facade of the sport and reveals the dark and disappointing reality behind it. Anusha Ranganath, Gopalkrishna Deshpande and others also delivered believable shows, with Karm Chawla’s lucid camerawork being one of the main highlights. ten is due out soon on OTT.

Jayathirtha’s poetic love story takes on a sci-fi twist with the holy city of Benares witnessing it! The The lower end of the bell The filmmaker uses the cryptic milieu of the city to tell a story that has philosophical layers but is an intriguing thriller in time at first glance. Zaid Khan makes a confident debut alongside the very charming Sonal Monteiro – Ajaneesh B. Loknath’s melodious soundtrack is also a highlight.

Funnyman Sharan’s slight departure from comedy sees him play a washed-up Kho-Kho player who has come out of the trenches to coach a group of unenthusiastic teenagers. The sports drama features an exciting cast of young performers who, along with the ever-reliable Sharan, put on a dynamic spectacle on screen – from gripping moments involving sports to an endearing 1990s setting, Guru Shishyaru has all the ingredients of a touching tale.

Ravindra’s ensemble feature Parameshwarappa may have gone completely unnoticed as a theatrical release, but the film still finds a place among the handful of well-made crime thrillers of 2022. This multi-narrative structure begins with an important drug dealing gone awry to trigger the start of a chaotic set of events in modern Bengaluru. With cops, drug lords, petty thieves and a wide variety of eccentric characters as part of the mix, yellow gangs is a fun watch that keeps you glued to your seats.

Although Prashanth Neel’s film was lauded by critics and viewers alike for its slightly underwhelming plot and the way some of the characters are employed in the narrative, KGF: Chapter 2 is still quite easily one of the most intense movie-watching experiences of recent times. The follow-up film to the 2018 hit boasted an exciting central cast led by Rocking Star Yash and included big names like Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon, but it would be fair to say that the real supporters are the men behind the scenes: writer- director Neel, art director Shivakumar, cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda, editor Ujwal Kulkarni and music composer Ravi Basrur. KGF 2 has gone on to gross more than Rs. 1200 crores across the globe.

Kiranraj K’s first outing might be a little rough around the edges, but the film definitely has its heart in the right place. An epic story of redemption and love that alludes to a tale from the Mahabharata, 777 Charlie shot at the hearts of the public and how. Aided by Rakshit Shetty’s passionate performance, Arvind S. Kashyap’s beautiful cinematography and Nobin Paul’s soothing score, 777 Charlie is quite easily among the most popular titles of the year in all languages. Special mention to BC Pramod, the dog trainer who helped Charlie, the adorable canine, breathe life and emotion into the film.

Much has been said and written about Rishab Shetty’s film, but there’s no denying the cultural impact it had during his theatrical reign. As a film, many have praised Rishab for looking into uncharted territory, its centuries-old culture and the inherent idiosyncrasies it carries, but more than anything else audiences were struck by its mesmerizing performance as a main man Shiva. The film’s last 20 or so minutes are the defining moments that catapulted Rishab Shetty to global fame and helped Hombale Films’ brand to grow.

Few films other than Amoghavarsha’s Gandhada Goudi carry the emotional essence that ceremonially binds audiences across an entire region. On the one hand, the documentary film showcased the vast physical and cultural beauty of Karnataka through breathtaking visuals and a superb soundtrack. On the other hand, it was a fitting send off to Powerstar Puneeth Rajkumar and his insatiable creative energy. Along the same lines, as a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience, Gandhada Goudi became one of the biggest commercial successes of the year.
