Eve Hewson on John Carney’s Sundance-Bowing Musical Drama ‘Flora and Son’ and Why She Didn’t Ask Her Dad (Bono) for Singing Advice

Anyone Who’s Seen Sharon Horgan’s Irish Comedy bad sisters on Apple TV+ will recognize her as Becka Garvey, the raucous, drunken, shambolic comic youngest of the Bad Sisters and one of the best characters on a deservedly beloved show. For Eve Hewson, the role of Becka – who she admits is somewhat close to herself – was a turning point in her career after more than a decade of acting.

A few months later, Hewson’s career is set to take another leap forward, this time as the lead in the long-awaited next feature from one of his native Dublin’s most beloved filmmakers, John Carney. seven years later street sing (and 15 years after his Oscar-winning escape Once), the writer-director returns with yet another of his musical proposals in Flora and son, losing Jan. 22 at Sundance. The film set in Dublin sees Hewson playing a wayward mother who discovers she’s finally able to bond with her equally troublesome son, played by Orén Kinlan, via music (and a stolen guitar). Joseph Gordon-Levitt acts as an online guitar teacher.

Talk to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the premiere, Hewson – who is also the second oldest child of U2 frontman Bono – explains how to overcome a “massive, massive fear” of singing in the film, and why she never turned to her father for help. musical advice: “I prefer to sing in front of the whole world.

Congratulation for Flora and son towards Sundance. Correct me if I’m wrong, but is this your first leading film role?

I guess it’s my first big movie. I directed this film called paper year, many years ago. It was a tiny bit of indie that obviously no one has seen but is actually really good. And then I also did TV shows. But this is my first like, big, big movie splash.

How would you describe Flora and son?

Oh my God, you’re the first person to ask that, so I’ll probably kill him. But it’s basically the story of a mother and a son and how the music ends up bringing them together. They have this kind of hilarious dysfunctional relationship where she had it when she was a teenager and never really took full responsibility for being a mother. And she’s been out partying and doing drugs and listening to techno, but he robs music stores and is a little troublemaker. She decides to steal a guitar from him for his birthday. And he tells her to fuck off. But one night, while she’s drunk in her apartment, she decides to learn the guitar herself, and then through some kind of musical learning, it opens her up and then they bond through it.

It sounds like a classic John Carney story. It’s been several years since we’ve had a film of him. Do you think people will like Flora and son as much as they liked Once and street sing?

Oh yeah. This is probably the most John movie John has ever done. What I like and what I would have liked to see more of in the cinema is that it takes you on a journey. Like a movie is supposed to. It’s a story about these characters living together trying to coexist and it’s not based on a book or a superhero or any of those things. We don’t need to be already connected to her when you meet her. But you end up falling in love with her and rooting for her and going on that emotional journey of being charmed and then being heartbroken and it all comes together in the end like a perfect movie should. And it’s really fun and kinda dirty and steamy. Then it also stabs you in the heart with pure optimism. I honestly think people are going to love it because we need it.

It reminds me a bit wild rosewhich was one of my favorite movies of the last few years.

Oh I loved it wild rose! Yeah, it’s in the same vein of showing the power of music, and how you can turn on the radio and listen to a song and you don’t have to know anything about the person who’s singing but you feel something thing. And I guess that’s also the magic of how it’s used in our film.

Given that this is your first leading film role, how did this happen to you?

It was honestly my agent, who just sent it to me and kept saying ‘You have to read John’s movie, it’s so good.’ I did and it was one of my favorite scripts I’ve ever read. And I met John and he was stupid enough to choose me – I don’t know why. We’re on Zoom and we’re talking about it and I was like, ‘Okay, I want to do this. Usually, I never put myself in this position. I guess it’s more of an American thing to go after what you want. I’m a little more Irish, a little more shy. But for some reason I just felt confident that day and I was like, ‘I want to do this’ and he said, ‘Okay, let’s do this. »

Once won an Oscar for original song. Are there any that could potentially go the distance?

Of course, and they are beautiful. It was truly one of the best movie moments I’ve had in my life, because I had never sung before. I never wanted to sing before. I’m not particularly good at it. So when I was talking to John, I was like, “You know, I’m not a Beyoncé. But I can tell the story of someone trying to express something and make it sound good. And that’s kind of what I proposed on the table. But I was so nervous about singing and John is so funny in the way he works, it’s so instinctive and such an in-the-moment creation for him. So I thought I was going to get the songs way before shooting so I could practice and be really prepared, but by the time we started shooting there were no more songs. Like nothing. So we would shoot Monday through Friday, and every Saturday we would go to the studio together and sit there and write songs together. And that was the best part of the whole experience, because it would be me, Joe Gordon-Levitt, Gary Clark, our music supervisor, and John, just the four of us, and he’d be like, “Listen, if we don’t “. If we can’t find something, we’re not going to shoot it next week. And within hours, we’d have written a song and then I’d be like, ‘Okay, can I go home and practice this for a week. And they’d be like, ‘I think you should just record it now. »

So I guess, in the film, when we see you and hear you sing, are you the one singing?

It’s all me singing. All that and not even with Auto-Tune when you can just fix that little thing to make it a little better. In fact, we really like it. It’s sort of off and it looks like a real person. I overcame a huge, huge fear doing this. I prefer swimming with sharks.

Excuse my ignorance, but do you already know how to play the guitar?

Yeah. I grew up playing music. But actually I hated the guitar, I hate strings and calluses and once I figured out the chords I was like, fuck. But yes, I played guitar when I was younger but I was more into drums and piano. These are my instruments. I grew up in some kind of traveling circus house and they just sent us to all these different music lessons every day after school so they could get rid of us.

Sorry to ask you this, but obviously your father is quite famous for his musical talents. Did you get any singing tips or perform any of the songs in front of him?

Not until they’re over. Because I knew he would start coming up with lots of ideas to help me with my singing. And I must say that I prefer to sing in front of the whole world than for my father. It would be terrifying. I mean, he’s a very, very good singer. So he was very nice and wanted to help and I was just like, no. But he could hear the finished product and loved it. But yeah, otherwise he was just going to get into my head.

Outside of the movie, I noticed you comically embraced the recent ‘Nepo Baby’ debate. on Twitter which emerged as a result of a New York magazine article.

Oh yeah. I mean, I think a lot of people don’t understand that this has kind of been my narrative all my life. So I have a lot of funny jokes to make about it. So yeah, I just thought it was hilarious. And this article was so hilarious. I just thought, why not have fun?

I appreciate that you’ve been an actor for a while, but do you feel that over the past two years, with behind his eyes on Netflix and in particular bad sistersAre you finally stepping into people’s vision and getting the recognition and roles you’ve been looking for?

Yeah and it’s such a good feeling. I mean, I’ve always acted and always worked with amazing directors and gotten great roles, but they never really got the attention that I’ve had for the past two years. . And in a way, it was a blessing. I’ve been an actor since I was 18. And I’m 31 now. So I just feel a lot more centered to, I guess, take it and in a much better place than I probably would be if I was 22. But yeah, it’s a fantastic feeling to be able to say, “Those are all the things I’ve done and I’m so proud of them. And especially bad sisters. Being on a show you’re really, really, really proud of is just the best feeling in the world. We did this show not knowing if anyone was going to watch it and it went viral. And my character is so close to my heart and so close to who I am and so different from the roles I usually play. I spent a lot of my 20s going to different auditions for roles like ‘sexy girl with tits’. And Becka is just the complete antithesis of that and that’s the role I have the most respect for. So it’s the most rewarding, happiest, warmest feeling you can have as an actor.

Speaking of bad sisters, although I loved the series, I was surprised when Apple ordered a second season because the story seemed to end so perfectly. Any idea where Sharon will take her next?

I have a small idea. Sharon is an absolute gangster, and I think she’ll be able to find a way to continue the story where it feels just as dramatic, just as exciting, and just as fun. I’ve heard some very, very good rumours. There’s always this fear of like, oh no, the second album or the second season. But I know Sharon so well and I think she’ll work twice as hard as she did on the first one, because she wants to make it as good. And now the pressure is so high. When we did it, we didn’t know if people were going to watch it. But now it’s like people are watching, so we have to make it good!
