Deadly violence on the rise between Israelis and Palestinians

As Israelis begin a week off to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot, the country and the Palestinian territories are going through a new deadly episode. On Saturday evening, an 18-year-old Israeli soldier named Noa Lazar was killed in an armed attack in East Jerusalem.

Israeli politicians reacted quickly, with Prime Minister Yair Lapid promising “ bring those responsible to justice of the attack, a “ heinous crime “. For his part, President Isaac Herzog spoke of a “ despicable terrorist » and promised : « We will fight terrorism and continue to build our lives and celebrate our holidays “, before assuring his confidence in the army.

The Israeli army has confirmed that it carried out a raid in Jenin to arrest a 25-year-old Palestinian, suspected of being a member of Islamic Jihad and of having fired on soldiers. “ During the operation, dozens of Palestinians threw explosive devices and Molotov cocktails at Israeli soldiers, who also came under fire “, she explained in a press release. And to acknowledge: The soldiers responded by firing live ammunition at the armed suspects. »

The UN is concerned

Faced with these increasing Israeli operations in the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority of Mahmoud Abbas called on the United States to “ increase pressure on Israel to end its all-out war against the Palestinian people “. The Israeli operations will lead to an explosion and a point of no return, with devastating consequences for all “, also warned Nabil Abou Roudeina, spokesperson for President Abbas. The situation is all the more tense as, three weeks before the legislative elections, the political debate in Israel gives a large place to security issues.
