‘Cobra Kai’ star Ralph Macchio didn’t shy away from talking about the real feud with William Zabka

The simmering tension on screen between Cobra Kai co stars Ralph Macchio and Guillaume Zabka? Not completely far from reality.

On October 16, Ralph spoke with The Guardian in an exclusive interview about his new book, Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me. He revealed everything in his memoirs, including his regret at having former co-star Elizabeth Shuefrom history to a close cast Friends. However, fans around the world cried out when Ralph admitted his then and present teammate William never got along.

The duo played enemies – Ralph as Daniel LaRusso and William as Johnny Lawrence – in the original 1984 film The Karate Kid. Although it inspired a decades-long success story, with the two reprising their roles for Netflix Cobra Kaiturns out the conflict followed them off-screen.

According The Guardian, there was an accident while filming the Halloween fight that ended with Ralph being eliminated, which certainly translated to the intensity of the feud.

Although the duo only raved about each other in the press, their friendship wasn’t rekindled until years later – 2005, to be exact – when they first met in Pat Morita (a.k.a Mr. Miyagi), funeral. “He caught my eye,” Ralph said in his memoir of the reunion. “No smile, just a simple smile. »

Before Cobra Kai season 5, William also spoke about their friendship. “A director chose us both [of] the universe and threw us into the same web. And then the movie blew up and became a classic,” said the Time travelling machine actor. “Over the years, Ralph and I had seen each other, we had crossed paths at different festivals and this and that, [a] memorial for Pat Morita. »

It seemed like the step forward they needed as Ralph later joined William on a few other projects, including an appearance on how I Met Your Mother. In fact, an ongoing joke on the sitcom about what Daniel and Johnny could do as middle-aged men kinda foreshadowed what was to come for the two.

With Cobra Kai Season 6 isn’t that far away, maybe we’ll see even more parallels. Here is a solid alliance between Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang!
