Celine Dion is doing everything in her power to get better.

After the “My Heart Will Go On” singer revealed that she has stiff person syndrome and will therefore be postponing upcoming concert dates, a source told PEOPLE that she is “focusing on his health and his children.

“Celine is overwhelmed and moved by the outpouring of love and support from her fans,” the source told PEOPLE on Friday. “It’s been a very tough time and she has a tough road ahead of her, but she’s doing everything she can to get back on stage and see her fans. »

The “Power of Love” singer, 54, revealed the news in a tearful video in English and French on her Instagram account.

“I’ve been struggling with health issues for a long time, and it’s been very difficult for me to deal with these challenges and talk about all that I’ve been through,” Dion wrote in the post’s caption. “It pains me to tell you that I will not be ready to resume my tour of Europe in February. »

“Recently I was diagnosed with a very rare neurological condition called stiff-person syndrome, which affects around one in a million people,” she said in her video. “While we are still learning about this rare disease, we now know that this is what caused all the spasms I had. »

The disease, according to the Stiff Person Syndrome Foundation, affects the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. “Patients may be disabled, in a wheelchair or bedridden, unable to work and care for themselves,” they say, adding that neurological disease with autoimmune features may include symptoms such as “hyper -rigidity, debilitating pain, chronic anxiety”. and muscle spasms “so violent they can dislocate joints and even break bones.”

“Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life,” Dion continued. “It sometimes causes me difficulty when I walk and does not allow me to use my vocal cords to sing as I am used to. »

Dion went on to note that she has “a great team of doctors working by my side to help me get better” and “my precious children who support me and give me hope.”

Due to her condition, Dion’s spring 2023 shows have been postponed to 2024, while eight of her summer 2023 shows – previously scheduled for May 31 to July 17, 2023 – have been canceled altogether.
